Trinidad and Tobago cyclist Kaylee Young bowed out of the women’s individual sprint event at the round-of-32 after she fell ill on the second day of the 51st UCI Junior Track World Championships at the Sport Vlaanderen Heusden-Zolder Velodrome in Limburg, Belgium, on Thursday.

When the women’s individual sprint flying 200m qualifiers took place, Young was the 27th-fastest of 28 riders with a time of 12.296 seconds at an average speed of 58.555 kilometres per hour, with Mexico’s Nicole Jimenez Rochin next in 12.467 seconds.

In the round-of-16, Young was due to face Great Britain’s Eve James, who was the sixth fastest qualifier in the morning heats with a time of 11.219 seconds at 64.176 kilometres per hour. However, the T&T rider was too ill to face the starter and bowed out of the event.

The top four finishers in the heats, Russian Veronika Solozobova (10.858), Italy’s Maya Ferrante (11.084), Belarus’ Angelina Shastak (11.135) and Czechia’s Emiie Jarosova (11.149) advanced straight to the round-of-16.

Today, T&T’s Christian Nelson and Kafele De Sormeaux will compete in the men’s sprint flying 200m heats, while on Saturday, Shamika Hoyte takes to the starter in the women’s 1km time trial.

The T&T team in Belgium also includes cyclist Zion Lucas, Sheryl Leacock (manager), Gregory D’Andrade (coach) and mechanic Sheldon Ramjit.
