Kino Daniel and Stephen Enile won the men’s Open title while Aliyah Urquhart and Destiny Narcis secured the women’s Open title as new champions were crowned when the fifth leg of the Trinbago Beach Volleyball hosted by the Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Association ended at Turtle Beach in Black Rock, Tobago on Sunday.
Appearing in their first final of the season, Tobagonian Daniel and Enile overwhelmed fellow first-time finalists, Devaughn Martin and Newton Grant, 21-19, 21-12 for the top spot. Earlier in the semifinals, Daniel and Enile battled past Kevin James and Dujuan Wallace 21-17, 21-15 while Martin and Grant humbled Dwayde Roberts and Kashion Alleyne 21-13, 21-8. James and Wallace ended the tournament on a high, after they took the bronze medal courtesy their 21-14, 21-17 defeat of Roberts and Alleyne.
When the round-robin group phase served off on Saturday, Daniel and Enile won Group A after beating Roberts and Alleyne 21-9, 21-11; and Rovorne Bacchus and Jamari Melville 21-15, 21-5.
The pair of Roberts and Alleyne ended in the second spot with a 1-1 record, with their win over Bacchus and Melville 21-12, 18-21, 15-10 in their tournament opener.
In Group B, Martin and Grant overcame James and Wallace 21-18, 21-16; and Kaden Hills and Nickale Farmer 21-4, 21-7. James and Wallace secured the runner-up spot in the pool courtesy of their 21-15, 21-15 defeat of Hills and Farmer.
In the quarterfinals, Roberts and Alleyne eased past Hills and Farmer 21-14, 21-15 while James and Wallace won by walkover against Bacchus and Melville. Hills and Farmer secured the fifth spot by walkover against Bacchus and Melville.
In the two-team women’s Open playoff, Urquhart and Narcis registered a straight-sets win over Arianna Duncan and Alejah Stewart 21-15, 21-19, to end as tournament winners.
The women’s Under-21 category was also contested among two teams, with Urquhart and Narcis emerging as the winners, this time via a 3-0 series win over Duncan and Stewart.
Urquhart and Narcis won the first match 21-17, 9-21, 15-8 before taking the next two matches with much more ease, 21-4, 21-8; and 21-13, 21-13.
However, the men’s Under-21 competition was contested amongst three teams with the pair of Roberts and Alleyne enjoying much better fortunes, topping the series with a 2-0 record. This, after Roberts and Alleyne beat Hills and Farmer 21-10, 24-22; and Melville and Bacchus 21-14, 22-20, while in the battle for the runner-up spot, Hills and Farmer defeated Melville and Bacchus 21-17, 21-18.
