Belize Coast Guard authorities have confirmed that three Honduran nationals remain detained following a maritime enforcement operation carried out over the weekend in Belize’s southern waters targeting illegal fishing activity. The interception occurred late Friday night in the Gladden Spit area, where members of the Belize Coast Guard’s newly established Maritime Enforcement Team, supported by a drone surveillance unit, detected a Honduran fishing vessel operating inside a protected spawning aggregation zone. According to authorities, the drone team initially spotted the vessel within the environmentally sensitive area before directing Coast Guard surface assets toward the target. Officials say the vessel attempted to evade authorities, triggering a brief pursuit at sea before the boat was successfully intercepted and the three occupants detained. Rear Admiral Gregory Soberanis, Commander of the Belize Coast Guard, confirmed the operation and spoke on the importance of strengthening enforcement efforts in protected marine areas.
The enforcement mission was conducted jointly with the Fisheries Department, the Wildlife Conservation Society, and the Southern Environmental Association as part of what authorities describe as a coordinated multi-agency approach to safeguarding Belize’s marine resources. Up to news time, officials had not disclosed what formal charges the detained Honduran fishermen may face.
