San Pedro Clinic Pushes Measles Vaccination Awareness

Healthcare workers at the Dr. Otto Rodriguez Polyclinic in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, stepped up on efforts to educate the public on measles prevention and the importance of vaccination.  Throughout the day, several members of the clinic’s staff were stationed outside the polyclinic engaging residents directly, distributing informational flyers and brochures, and answering questions related to measles symptoms, transmission, and protection through the Measles, Mumps and Rubella, or MMR, vaccine.  Dr. Molina, one of the attending physicians at the polyclinic, says the campaign is focused on ensuring that residents understand the importance of immunization and remain proactive about protecting their families and the wider community.

Lucile Molina, Doctor, San Pedro Polyclinic: “The Ministry of Health is informing the public, we’re getting a lot of questions. People are asking what is measles and how can I get infected? Do I have the vaccine am I covered? So therefore, yes, the general public is coming out. If they have their vaccination, there’s no need. But let’s say if they don’t have, yes, there’s a need to get it again.”

Reporter: But then how if a patient would come in and say, you know what, I’m not sure that I was vaccinated.

Lucile Molina, Doctor, San Pedro Polyclinic: “So then I would recommend them to get this shot.”

Reporter:  So there’s no harm in getting it?

Lucile Molina, Doctor, San Pedro Polyclinic: “There’s no harm in getting it.”

The campaign in San Pedro comes as healthcare authorities across Belize are focusing on spreading awareness on measles as the ministry works at containing the spread.
