Public Utilities Commission and International Telecommunication Union launch digital regulation workshop in Belmopan

The Public Utilities Commission (PUC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) launched the Workshop on Regulatory Innovation Mechanisms in Belmopan on March 25th, 2026, marking a significant step toward modernizing Belize’s digital regulatory landscape. The initiative operates under the framework of the EU-LAC Digital Alliance and the Global Gateway model, a collaboration between the European Union and Latin America and the Caribbean aimed at promoting sustainable investments in digital infrastructure. The workshop brings together national authorities, telecommunications operators, service providers, and regulators from digital-adjacent sectors to advance a shared vision of a fair and people-centred digital future. The workshop responds to a growing challenge facing regulators worldwide: the difficulty of keeping traditional regulatory frameworks in step with rapid technological change. Through the ITU’s Regulatory Innovation Project, Belize joins a group of beneficiary countries adopting more agile, next-generation approaches to regulation. The PUC plays a central role in this effort, fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors to ensure that digital expansion translates into a resilient and inclusive economy — not just broader access. With this initiative, Belize continues to strengthen its standing as a regional leader in regulatory modernization aligned with global best practices.
