Prime Minister Briceño Acknowledges Environmental Concerns Over Port Expansion

Prime Minister John Briceño is acknowledging growing concerns from environmental groups even as his administration moves forward with major development plans for Belize’s port infrastructure.  Speaking on Friday following the Department of the Environment’s approval for the Port of Belize expansion project, the Prime Minister noted that projects of this scale will inevitably draw scrutiny from environmentalists.  Briceño made it clear that while such concerns are expected, his government remains focused on balancing development with environmental responsibility.

The Prime Minister welcomed the green light granted by the National Environmental Appraisal Committee, describing it as a significant step forward for the project, which has been under review amid public debate and environmental concerns.  He added that his administration is prepared to engage with non-governmental organizations, but emphasized that delays can no longer hinder national progress.  The DOE’s approval comes with strict environmental conditions attached, aimed at mitigating the potential impact of the port expansion on surrounding ecosystems./
