Substantial overnight rainfall in Punta Gorda Town and surrounding areas has left several streets and residential yards flooded this morning as residents continue monitoring weather conditions across southern Belize. Areas across Punta Gorda reportedly experienced continuous rainfall through the night, resulting in water accumulating along low-lying streets and, in several communities, where drainage systems became overwhelmed. Our Senior Correspondent in Toledo, Paul Mahung, visited some of the affected areas earlier today and says residents are now closely watching river levels.
The latest flood forecast issued yesterday afternoon warned that continued rainfall could increase the risk of flash flooding in western, inland, and some coastal areas over the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours. While the official hydrology report noted that southern rivers, including the Sarstoon River, remained at normal levels as of Monday afternoon, authorities cautioned that flooding can occur quickly and without warning during periods of sustained rainfall. The report also indicated that conditions continue to be closely monitored nationwide, particularly in areas vulnerable to flash flooding and poor drainage. Residents are being advised to exercise caution and closely monitor weather updates as unstable weather conditions continue affecting parts of the country. No evacuations or major damages had been officially reported up to news time, though residents in flood-prone communities remain on alert as rainfall continues intermittently across the Toledo District.
