NTUCB Warns Birth Control Prescription Plan Would Roll Back Women’s Rights

Meanwhile, the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) is raising strong concerns to a proposal that would require women to obtain a doctor’s prescription in order to access birth control, describing the move as regressive and harmful to women’s rights.  In a press release issued today, the umbrella trade union body rejected the proposal outright, arguing that it undermines a woman’s autonomy and represents a significant rollback of progress made over decades in reproductive health and personal freedom. According to the NTUCB, such a requirement would take Belize “nearly 50 years backward” to a time when women had far less control over decisions affecting their own bodies.  The organization also highlighted serious practical concerns, pointing to a shortage of gynecologists in the country. It noted that requiring prescriptions would create additional barriers, particularly for working women who may not have the time or financial flexibility to attend medical appointments simply to access routine contraceptives.  The NTUCB further warned that the proposal could place added strain on Belize’s already burdened public healthcare system, as clinics and hospitals would be forced to accommodate additional visits that are not medically urgent. The group emphasized that healthcare facilities should remain focused on treating the sick and vulnerable rather than being overwhelmed by avoidable consultations.  Framing the issue beyond healthcare, the NTUCB stressed that access to birth control is also tied to dignity, equality, and economic participation. It is now calling on policymakers to abandon what it describes as an outdated and restrictive approach and instead pursue policies that expand access to reproductive healthcare and strengthen women’s rights.
