Efforts to improve water quality and sanitation in northern Belize continue to gain momentum, as the Orange Walk Town Council convened its fourth Project Monitoring Committee meeting for the New River Pilot Project. The session forms part of a series of monthly reviews designed to track the progress of the initiative, which is focused on restoring the health of the New River through innovative, science-based solutions. During the meeting, environmental expert Dr. Jaime Gutierrez of Algae Biosolutions presented the latest results from bioreactor systems currently deployed under the project. The technology uses natural biological processes to improve water quality, targeting pollution while enhancing overall river health. Officials say the pilot is not only aimed at environmental restoration but also at strengthening sanitation outcomes for nearby communities that rely on the river. The project is being funded through a loan program from the Inter-American Development Bank and implemented with support from the Belize Social Investment Fund. With the pilot scheduled to conclude in June, stakeholders say the findings will be shared with the wider community, helping to inform future environmental management strategies across Belize.
