New Bus Fares Hit Commuters

Commuters across Belize are feeling the proverbial financial pinch following yesterday’s increase in bus fares.  The new 2026-tiered bus fare system has sparked concern among daily passengers; many of whom say the increases are adding financial pressures on their daily lives. Love News visited the Belize City bus terminal today where we spoke with several commuters on the new prices, and how it is affecting their daily travel.

For many commuters, the issue goes beyond fare prices. Crowding remains a persistent problem during peak morning and afternoon travel hours into Belize City and Belmopan. Some passengers also report that older buses and limited comfort continue to be concerns, particularly on longer routes.

Under the revised structure, fares along the western route now range between $10 and $14 depending on destination and service level. Shorter village trips along the George Price Highway have also increased, now costing between $4 and $10. In the north, travel between Orange Walk and Corozal averages $6 to $7, while trips to the border can reach up to $9. The changes follow negotiations between the Government of Belize and the Belize Bus Association, which had been calling for fare adjustments due to rising fuel prices, maintenance demands, and overall operational costs.
