Ministry of Transport Launches “Fair Fares” Campaign

The Ministry of Transportation has launched a new public awareness campaign aimed at ensuring that commuters across Belize are charged approved bus fares and protected from overcharging. The campaign, titled “Fair Fares. Fair for All,” encourages members of the public to report incidents where bus operators charge more than the officially approved rates. Commuters are being urged to submit complaints through a dedicated WhatsApp hotline at 613-3104.  According to the Ministry, the initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to keep Belize’s public transportation system fair, safe, and accountable, particularly as new fare structures and transportation reforms continue to be implemented nationwide.  The Ministry is asking commuters who make reports to provide as much detail as possible, including the bus route, the license plate number of the bus, the time of travel, and any additional information that may help authorities identify the operator involved.  The public campaign comes amid heightened national attention surrounding transportation costs and fare regulations following recent negotiations between the government and bus operators over proposed fare adjustments and fuel subsidies.  Officials say the reporting system is intended to strengthen enforcement and ensure that commuters are not unfairly burdened by unauthorized fare increases. The Ministry says all reports received through the hotline will assist authorities in investigating complaints and taking appropriate action where necessary.
