- / Minister of Transport says National Bus Company transition shows promise despite early challenges
Four weeks after the historic amalgamation of seventeen bus operators into the National Bus Company, Minister of Transport Dr. Louis Zabaneh describes the transition as both challenging and promising. The formation of the National Bus Company marked a major step in the government’s plan to modernize Belize’s public transportation system, bringing together previously independent operators under a unified structure. According to Dr. Zabaneh, however, integrating multiple companies into one cohesive entity has come with its share of initial hurdles. He explained that differences in workplace culture, along with administrative and personnel adjustments, have required careful coordination.
Despite these early challenges, the Minister says the work to standardize operations is already underway. Efforts are being made to streamline systems, including the reconciliation of staff bank accounts and personnel records, while also fostering a unified corporate culture among employees who previously worked under different operators. Looking ahead, Dr. Zabaneh outlined key improvements on the horizon, including the introduction of standardized uniforms and the long-anticipated addition of electric buses to the national fleet.
He noted that the government is aiming to have the first set of e-buses in operation by September, a move expected to enhance efficiency, reduce fuel dependency, and improve the overall commuter experience.
