Minister of Labour, Kareem Musa, is adding his voice to the ongoing national discussion on proposed measures to curb alcohol consumption, indicating his support for the introduction of sin taxes from a social standpoint. Musa says that beyond the public health implications, the issue must also be viewed through the lens of its impact on families and communities, noting that alcohol abuse often contributes to broader social challenges. According to the Minister, his position is informed by firsthand awareness of how alcohol misuse can affect family units, leading to financial strain, domestic conflict, and long-term social consequences.

Kareem Musa, Minister of Labour: “I would be lying if I didn’t say I see the damage caused by Red Top in our country, by alcohol on a whole it’s not just Red Top. I think at the very least it should be taxed, it shouldn’t be so accessible and so cheap. So that’s something because we are reviewing right now tax laws that is something that I should see a sin tax, my opinion.”
Musa says that while such policies may not be universally popular, they are worth considering if they can help address both the health and social impacts associated with excessive alcohol consumption. The discussion is expected to continue as Government weighs its options and consults with stakeholders on potential measures aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and strengthening family and community well-being./
