A transition is underway at the Belize Central Prison, as a new Chief Executive Officer is already being prepared to take over leadership of the institution. George Gomez is currently undergoing training at the facility, signaling an imminent change in command as long-serving CEO Virgilio Murillo prepares to step down from the post he has held for over a decade. Murillo is expected to exit the role in early July, bringing to a close a twelve-year tenure as Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Belize Central Prison under the Kolbe Foundation. Murillo first joined the Kolbe Foundation in December of 2002 and has spent more than two decades working within Belize’s prison system. Over the years, he rose through the ranks to become one of the most recognizable figures in corrections, known for his firm and disciplined approach to prison management. During his time at the helm, Murillo maintained a strong emphasis on order, accountability, and adherence to the rule of law, while also supporting the Kolbe Foundation’s broader mission of rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders into society. His leadership style, often described as stern and uncompromising, played a significant role in shaping the operations and culture of the Belize Central Prison during a critical period of its development. While no official statement has yet been issued on the handover, Murillo’s exit marks the end of a significant chapter in Belize’s prison administration.
