Indigenous Groups Demand Investigation Into Indian Creek Alcalde Incident

The National Garifuna Council and the Belize National Indigenous Council are tonight expressing strong solidarity with the Maya people of southern Belize, following the troubling developments reported out of Indian Creek Village. In a joint statement, the organizations raised concern over what they describe as disturbing reports, including the alleged kidnapping of a village alcalde. They say the situation highlights longstanding tensions surrounding the recognition and protection of Indigenous land rights in Belize.  According to the statement, both the Maya and Garifuna peoples share a deep and ongoing struggle to safeguard their ancestral lands, cultures, and rights. The groups emphasize that these rights have already been affirmed through landmark legal decisions and are protected under Belize’s Constitution, as well as international human rights frameworks.  They further condemned any acts of intimidation, coercion, or violence directed at Indigenous leaders and communities, stressing that such actions undermine the rule of law, public safety, and democratic governance.  The organizations are now calling for a full and transparent investigation into the reported incident in Indian Creek, along with immediate measures to ensure the safety of community leaders and residents. They are also urging continued respect for Indigenous rights and meaningful dialogue in resolving disputes affecting these communities.  The statement concludes by reaffirming that the protection of Indigenous rights is not solely an Indigenous issue, but one of national importance, rooted in justice, human rights, and the integrity of Belize as a whole.
