A former shipping employee is out on bail tonight after being taken to court in connection with a burglary at his former workplace, an incident that was reportedly captured on surveillance camera. Thirty-two-year-old Nevin Jaheel Dixon, an unemployed resident of the Blackberry Estate area in Burrell Boom, appeared before the court where he initially pleaded guilty to burglary. However, that plea was later changed after his explanation raised a possible defense, prompting the Senior Magistrate to enter an equivocal plea of not guilty on his behalf. Police say the charge stems from a report made by a supervisor at Inter District Shipping Company on Cemetery Road, Belize City, where a sum of one hundred and eighty-nine dollars was discovered missing from the business’s cash pan. Investigations revealed that the company’s premises had been secured on the evening of March 24. On the following day, however, while reviewing surveillance footage from a neighboring business, the supervisor reportedly observed Dixon, who had recently been terminated, entering the building without permission. According to police, the footage showed Dixon moving through an adjoining area into the shipping office and later exiting, raising suspicion that he was responsible for the missing funds. Authorities say Dixon had been fired days earlier over concerns related to the handling of money and was not authorized to re-enter the premises. In court, Dixon admitted to taking the money but claimed he acted out of frustration after being dismissed and allegedly not paid for work he had already completed. He told the court he needed the money to support his children and manage travel between locations. However, that explanation was deemed sufficient to raise a possible legal defense, and the matter has now been set for trial. Dixon was granted bail in the sum of four thousand dollars plus one surety of the same amount. As part of his bail conditions, he is prohibited from contacting the complainant or any prosecution witnesses and must remain at least one hundred feet away from his former workplace. He is scheduled to return to court on May 29, as the case proceeds to trial.
