FIU Warns Belizeans About Fraudulent Emails Impersonating Staff

The Financial Intelligence Unit is tonight warning Belizeans to remain vigilant after discovering fraudulent emails being circulated by individuals impersonating FIU staff members. In a public advisory issued on May 13, the FIU says scammers are using names, titles, logos, signatures, and even email addresses designed to appear as though they originate from the FIU’s official domain.  According to the FIU, some of the fraudulent messages reference loan approvals, financial assistance, banking details, payments, and other financial transactions in an effort to deceive members of the public.  The Unit is reminding Belizeans that the FIU does not approve or grant loans, process financial transactions, or request sensitive personal or banking information through unsolicited email communications.  Members of the public are strongly advised not to reply to suspicious emails, click unknown links, open attachments, or provide passwords, banking information, or confidential documents. The FIU is also urging Belizeans not to proceed with any loan or financial transaction based solely on such emails.  The advisory further encourages anyone receiving suspicious communications to verify the message directly through official FIU contact channels and to immediately report the email to fiuadmin@fiubelize.org.  The FIU says anyone who may have already shared personal or financial information should immediately contact their financial institution, change affected passwords, and report the matter to the relevant authorities.
