Cycling Federation Faces Backlash Over Demand for Athletes to Return Stipends

Love News has uncovered growing discontent within Belize’s cycling fraternity, after members of the national team were reportedly asked to return stipends issued to them for international competition.  Information reaching our newsroom is that cyclists who represented Belize at the Pan American Championship in Colombia were each given a three-hundred U.S. dollar stipend to cover incidental expenses while on assignment. In a surprising turn, however, a senior official of the Belize Cycling Federation has now requested that those funds be returned.  Love News has received screenshots of text messages sent directly to riders, in which the executive cites higher-than-expected expenses tied to Belizean American cyclist Cory Williams as the reason behind the request. According to those messages, the cost of Williams’ accommodation exceeded projections, prompting a call for team members to reimburse the stipends issued to them.  However, several cyclists are disputing that request, maintaining that the funds have already used for legitimate incidental expenses, particularly food. Some say they can provide receipts, noting that meals provided during the trip were inadequate, forcing them to spend out of pocket.  Tensions are further heightened by allegations surrounding disparities in accommodation. Reports indicate that while Williams was accommodated in a five-star hotel, other Belizean riders were placed in significantly lower-quality lodging, with some describing it as unfit to be considered a proper hotel. One message shared with Love News describes the facility where riders stayed as a “UCI facility,” but far below acceptable standards.  Love News reached out to the Vice President, Michael Arthurs, to clarify the Federation’s position.  According to Arthurs, the stipend in question was issued to only three individuals who participated in the trip. He explained that the Federation subsequently made the decision to cover all expenses for the entire delegation, and as a result, the stipends were requested to be returned.  Arthurs also indicated a willingness to provide full transparency, stating that he is prepared to meet and review all receipts related to the expenses incurred during the trip.
