Corozal Police Probe Shooting That Injured Wilbert Vellos

Police in Corozal are investigating a shooting incident that left a young man injured last night in the Finca Solana area.  Reports are that Wilbert Vellos, also known as “Lulu,” was targeted by a lone gunman shortly after arriving at his home. Vellos is the grandson of the late Arnold “Colo” Vellos, whose murder nearly six months ago still leaves questions unanswered.  According to initial information, Vellos had just returned home with a friend when the assailant reportedly emerged from the nearby cemetery and opened fire. Up to five shots were fired in his direction, with one bullet reportedly striking him in the back. The friend who was with him says the gunman also pointed the weapon at him, but it jammed, possibly saving his life.  Authorities say Vellos had previously been the intended target of a shooting on October 31, 2025, raising concerns about ongoing threats against him.  He was first transported by ambulance to the Corozal Community Hospital and has since been transferred to the Northern Regional Hospital for further treatment. His condition remains unknown at this time.  Residents in the area report that police had responded to an anonymous tip about suspicious activity shortly before the shooting. A dark-tinted SUV was also reportedly seen leaving the area around the time of the incident.  Police investigations are ongoing, and no official arrests have been made.
