Cabinet Approves Hurricane, Transport and Rural Development Measures

Cabinet has approved a series of measures ranging from hurricane preparedness and public transportation reforms to rural development projects and national security concerns during its latest meeting held on May 26 in Belmopan. With the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season set to officially begin on June first, Cabinet received a full briefing from senior officials within the ministry responsible for Disaster Risk Management. Government says Cabinet gave its full support and approval for the hurricane preparedness measures currently being put in place ahead of the season. Officials are again reminding Belizeans to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates, and ensure their hurricane plans are ready in the event of a storm threat.  Cabinet also endorsed a proposed concession agreement between the Department of Transport, the Transport Board, and the National Bus Company. According to the government, the agreement is intended to create a more structured operational and regulatory framework for the modernization of Belize’s public transportation system. Officials say the move is expected to facilitate investment by the National Bus Company while improving the reliability, safety, and financial sustainability of the bus industry.  Meanwhile, Cabinet welcomed an update on Belize’s project submissions under the CARICOM Development Fund. Government says approximately nine million dollars in combined loan and grant funding will go toward projects focused on rural poverty reduction, agricultural modernization, and climate-resilient infrastructure. Planned initiatives include school infrastructure projects in the Corozal and Cayo districts, honey and livestock development programs, and the construction of a market building in Bella Vista, Toledo.

Cabinet also expressed serious concern over reports that a private citizen reportedly removed dangerous military ordinances from the Baldy Beacon area in the Cayo District. Officials reminded the public that the area is periodically restricted to facilitate military operations and training exercises. Cabinet has now requested a full investigation into the incident to prevent any future recurrence.
