Bus Modernization Plan Could Include Terminal Upgrades

Love News understands that the proposed financing arrangement for the National Bus Company (NBC) could go far beyond the acquisition of electric buses. According to Minister of Transportation Dr. Louis Zabaneh, government is also looking at using the financing package to improve transportation infrastructure, including upgrades to bus terminals across the country.  

Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Transport: “We have new terminals to build in Belize City, in Orange Walk, in Punta Gorda, and in San Ignacio. And then we’re already starting to upgrade like in Belmopan. We have a terminal in Dangriga, one in Corozal, one in Independence. So that’s another aspect of the development of the NBC. Everybody’s performance is to be checked, everyone. And then those who are just on temporarily, well, we will base if they can stay longer and we need them we will make a case for that. Other than that, there’s also an ad out on positions that NBC has opened and so that is also on the Facebook page.”

Another aspect of the NBC is the management.  Dr. Zabaneh confirmed today that changes in the management structure of the NBC are expected in the coming weeks as the ministry continues restructuring efforts of the company’s operations.

Dr. Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Transport: “Everybody that was hired on March 1st it’s a three-month contract that they have. Everybody came on in a temporary position / status. And because some of them said that they’re coming in to assist because they have a passion for seeing the success of this entity, others came on with an interest to be performing and going for longer term. So that’s coming to an end the end of this month. So we now need to look at those people who said that they were here just temporarily and replace them and then have more permanent arrangements with those who are gonna stay for the longer term.”

While details on the incoming management structure were not fully disclosed, Dr. Zabaneh indicated that the planned adjustments are intended to enhance accountability and operational oversight.
