Belize Water Services marks 25 years with national exhibition

Belize Water Services (BWS) celebrated a landmark milestone yesterday as the national water and sewerage utility marked its 25th anniversary with an exhibition held in Belize City. The event marks a significant chapter in the country’s history of public utilities. BWS was formed in January 2001 and officially vested with the assets and liabilities of the former Water and Sewerage Authority in March 2001, with its twenty five year operating license taking effect from March 23, 2001. Today’s celebration brought that historic licensing period to a close. The exhibition brought together staff, stakeholders and members of the public to reflect on the utility’s journey over the past twenty five years. Executive Chairman of BWS, Cornelio Acosta, made mention of giving back to the people.

BWS has served as the backbone of water and sewerage services across the country, providing coverage to all of Belize’s municipalities. Approximately forty five villages nationwide are all coordinated from its headquarters in Belize City. Over the years, BWS has overseen the management and delivery of clean water and sanitation services to thousands of Belizean households and businesses, which plays a critical role in the country’s public health and development. As BWS looks ahead beyond its initial licensing period, the anniversary exhibition served as both a celebration of past achievements and a moment of reflection on the opportunities that lie ahead.
