Belize to Honor Andy Palacio With Monument in Barranco

Plans are underway to honor one of Belize’s most celebrated cultural figures, Andy Palacio, with the construction of a national monument in his hometown of Barranco Village in the Toledo District.  Area Representative for Toledo East, Osmond Martinez, announced that the project will be carried out in collaboration with the National Institute of Culture and History.  Palacio, who passed away in 2008, is widely credited with elevating Garifuna music on the global stage, particularly through his work in paranda and punta. His contributions helped bring international recognition to Belize’s rich cultural heritage and solidified his legacy as a cultural ambassador.  The monument, which is expected to be constructed in Barranco, his birthplace, is being welcomed by residents in southern Belize as a meaningful tribute to his life and impact.  The initiative is part of a broader cultural development plan for the Toledo District, which also includes the establishment of a House of Culture in Punta Gorda. Further details on the monument’s design and construction timeline are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
