Belize Steps Up Hurricane Preparedness

With less than three weeks remaining before the start of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season, the Government of Belize is intensifying its national preparedness efforts. This week, Minister of the Public Service and Disaster Risk Management, Henry Charles Usher, visited the headquarters of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), in Belmopan to review the country’s state of readiness ahead of June 1. During the visit, Minister Usher met with NEMO Coordinator Daniel Mendez and members of the technical team, who provided updates on ongoing hurricane preparedness activities, response planning, and operational priorities.  Discussions focused on strengthening coordination among national agencies, reviewing emergency response procedures, and ensuring that the systems, personnel, and resources needed to respond to tropical storms and hurricanes are fully in place before the season officially begins.  NEMO officials also briefed the Minister on several preparedness measures already underway across the country. These include the review and updating of the national hurricane shelter list in collaboration with local authorities and partner agencies. The Shelter Repair Committee is also expected to begin inspections and assessments of designated shelters to identify any repairs or upgrades needed before peak hurricane activity.  Additionally, emergency supplies, response equipment, and operational resources at both the national and district levels are being assessed to ensure full readiness in the event of a disaster.  Minister Usher emphasized that preparedness, coordination, and public awareness remain critical components in reducing the impact of hurricanes and other natural hazards on Belizean communities. He commended NEMO personnel for their continued dedication and encouraged Belizeans to begin making their own preparations by reviewing family emergency plans, stocking essential supplies, and staying informed throughout the hurricane season.
