Belize Preparing to Lead COSEFIN in 2026

Belize is advancing preparations to assume the 2026 Pro Tempore Presidency of the Council of Ministers of Finance or Treasury of Central America, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, known as COSEFIN. For four days this week, the COSEFIN Executive Secretariat conducted an official mission in Belize aimed at supporting the Ministry of Economic Transformation ahead of Belize’s leadership role in the second half of 2026. The visit focused on strengthening Belize’s participation in the regional fiscal agenda, discussing key regional projects, and identifying opportunities for collaboration between Belize’s national priorities and COSEFIN initiatives. As part of the mission, representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Statistical Institute of Belize, and officers from the Climate Finance Unit and Policy and Planning Unit met with the COSEFIN Executive Secretariat to discuss climate finance initiatives and preparations for an upcoming Climate Finance Forum. Officials say the meetings are helping to strengthen regional coordination and advance shared priorities as Belize prepares to assume the Pro Tempore Presidency from July to December.  Prime Minister John Briceño, along with Minister of State Dr. Osmond Martinez and CEO Carlos Pol, also met with the delegation to discuss Belize’s role in promoting regional fiscal cooperation and disaster risk financial management. COSEFIN says Belize’s presidency will provide an opportunity to further strengthen regional collaboration and economic resilience across Central America, Panama, the Dominican Republic, and Belize.
