The academic community in Belize is mourning the loss of respected educator and business professional Dr. Sylvia Cattouse, who passed away last night. Galen University announced her passing, noting that Dr. Cattouse served as the Dean of the Faculty of Business and Entrepreneurship. Dr. Cattouse was widely recognized for her contributions to higher education, business development, and gender equity advocacy in Belize. She held a Master of Business Administration in International Business and International Marketing from UCLA and a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership and Higher Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. At Galen University, a prayer service was held this morning as tributes continue to pour in from students, faculty members, and colleagues who described Dr. Cattouse as a mentor, leader, and passionate advocate for education. Dr. Eve Aird, Provost of Galen University, reflected on Dr. Cattouse’s legacy and the impact she leaves behind.
Dr. Cattouse was also deeply involved in volunteerism and Rotary service. At the time of her passing, she was serving as President of the Rotary Club. Over the years, Dr. Cattouse served in several senior positions at the University of Belize, including Dean of Enterprise Development, Dean of Administration, Interim Vice President of Finance, and Chair of the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences. She also lectured for more than two decades at institutions including the University of Belize, UWI Cave Hill, UWI Open Campus, and Galen University. Beyond academia, Dr. Cattouse played an important role in national development. She was the founding director of the Belize Export and Investment Promotion Unit, a predecessor to BELTRAIDE, and served on the National Women’s Commission, where she contributed to the development of policies addressing gender-based violence and women’s empowerment./
