Health authorities announced the official launch of HIV self-testing kits in Belize. The kits, funded by the Global Fund through the Ministry of Economic Transformation, are now available at clinics nationwide following approval under existing health policies. The primary objective of the initiative is prevention, with a focus on protecting those who test negative from contracting the virus. The rollout is seen as a significant step in making HIV testing more accessible, private, and convenient, allowing individuals to test from the comfort of their own homes and follow up on their results accordingly. Ferdy Cabb, Project Manager told us more.
Officials also addressed the stigma surrounding HIV, emphasizing that those who are virally suppressed can live healthy, normal lives without transmitting the virus to others. Officials stressed that medications are available free of cost to those already living with the virus.
