A Belize City woman accused of robbing her husband at gunpoint is now on trial in the lower court, in a case that has drawn significant attention due to the domestic nature of the allegations and testimony from within her own family. Elvira Mulholland appeared before the court today, where she pleaded not guilty to a charge of robbery stemming from an incident that occurred on October 28, 2024, along the Coastal Highway near Mile 12. Prosecutors allege that Mulholland robbed her estranged husband, Jeffery Mulholland, of nine thousand dollars in cash and an iPhone valued at four thousand dollars during a violent confrontation that reportedly left him hospitalized. The trial, which is being heard summarily for the offence of robbery, opened with the prosecution calling multiple witnesses, including Mulholland’s own son, who took the stand and testified against her. According to his testimony, on the day of the incident, both his mother and stepfather left their home shortly after each other in separate vehicles, heading in the direction of La Democracia. He told the court that his mother appeared to be in a hurry as she followed behind his stepfather. A second key witness, an inspector from the Social Security Board, testified that while traveling along the Coastal Road that afternoon, he came upon two vehicles off the roadway. He said he observed an injured man waving for help but also saw a woman signaling for him not to stop. The witness told the court that he later saw the woman with what appeared to be a firearm and observed her taking an item from the man before fleeing the scene. Under cross-examination, the defense challenged aspects of the witness’s account, including the distance from which he claimed to have seen the firearm and the description of the item allegedly taken. Notably, the court heard that neither witness was able to positively identify Mulholland as the individual involved in the alleged robbery. The virtual complainant, Jeffery Mulholland, is currently out of the country and is expected to return to testify when the matter resumes on August 3. Mulholland is represented by attorneys Doctor Lynden Jones and Leeroy Banner, while the prosecution is being led by Crown Counsel. The court was also informed that a separate charge of attempted murder, arising from the same incident, has already been committed to the High Court and will be dealt with independently.////////
