Police are investigating a reported case of obtaining property by deception after a Belize City retiree claims she lost twenty-five hundred dollars to a woman who allegedly promised to assist her in acquiring legal land documents. According to police, sixty-year-old Celina Humes of Miller Street visited the Precinct One Crimes Investigation Branch on Wednesday morning and reported that sometime in September of last year she met a woman who identified herself as Jennifer Arana. Humes told investigators that the woman claimed she worked as a clerk at the Belize High Court and offered to help her obtain legal land documents for a fee. Police say that between September 2025 and February of this year, Humes made monthly cash payments to the woman at the High Court building on Regent Street in Belize City. The payments reportedly totaled two thousand five hundred Belize dollars. Humes reported that after making her last payment in February, she lost all communication with the woman and, up to this week, had not received any documents or a refund of her money. Police say statements have been recorded and investigators are seeking to obtain copies of receipts related to the transactions as the matter remains under investigation.
