Belize and UNDP Launch New Youth Rehabilitation Programme

The Government of Belize, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, has launched a new initiative aimed at improving how the country supports and rehabilitates vulnerable youth.  The programme, titled “Strengthening Youth Governance and Institutional Resilience for Peacebuilding in Belize,” was officially introduced on Wednesday at the New Beginnings Youth Development Centre in Belmopan.  Led by the Ministry of Human Development, Family Support and Gender Affairs, the initiative focuses on helping young people, especially those in state care or in conflict with the law, successfully reintegrate into society.  Minister Thea Garcia-Ramirez says the project addresses long-standing gaps in the system and represents a shift in how Belize treats at-risk youth. She explained that the New Beginnings facility is moving away from a detention-style approach and toward one centered on rehabilitation, support, and second chances.  With funding support of one hundred thousand Belize dollars from UNDP, the initiative will introduce practical changes such as better case management, individualized plans for each young person, and stronger support for families during reintegration. It will also provide training for staff in areas like conflict resolution and trauma-informed care, while expanding counseling and mental health services.  UNDP representatives say the goal is to build a system that not only manages vulnerable youth, but actively supports their growth and potential.
