A brutal stabbing in Placencia has claimed the life of a senior executive in Belize’s banana industry, leaving a community in shock and a suspect in police custody. Police say the victim, Rolando Vindas Cespedes, a fifty-one-year-old Costa Rican national and general manager of Fyffes Banana Farm, was attacked yesterday morning at a residence along Caribbean Way. Reports are that shortly after 8:30 a.m., officers responded to information of a stabbing at the location. Upon arrival, they were directed to the upper floor of a two-storey building, where Cespedes was found suffering from multiple stab wounds and bleeding heavily. He was taken to the Placencia Polyclinic but was pronounced dead less than an hour later. Police detained a forty-seven-year-old man from the Maya Beach area at the scene, and he remains in custody as investigations continue. Police spokesperson, Stacy Smith, says investigators believe the suspect was known to the victim and had some level of familiarity with him, as they lived in close proximity.

Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “Police have detained one male person in connection with an ongoing investigation into a stabbing incident which resulted in the death of 51 year old Rolando Vida Céspedes, a Costa Rican national and general manager of Fyfe’s Banana Farm. The ongoing investigation commenced on Thursday 26 March in March 2025 at around 8;30am when Placencia police received a report of a stabbing incident at a residence located on Placencia Road in Stann Creek District. The officers proceeded to that location where they encountered Céspedes with several wounds to the body. He was rushed to the Placencia Polyclinic, however, he later succumbed to the injuries that he sustained. Though police have detained a male person and we anticipate that an arrest will be forthcoming. We do not have a motive at this time. But we believe that the suspect was familiar with the victim given the proximity within which they reside. I cannot comment if the relationship was something more than that.”
Authorities say no clear motive has yet been established, but investigators are following several leads as they work to determine what led to the fatal confrontation.
