More than one hundred and fifty Americans visiting San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, for a week-long corporate staff retreat have taken time away from leisure activities to give back to the island community through a major beautification initiative at the Boca del Rio Park. The visitors are described as some of the top-performing employees of a United States-based firm, who were rewarded with an all-expenses-paid trip to Belize in recognition of their performance. The group, however, wanted their visit to leave a lasting impact on the island as part of a broader corporate social responsibility effort. Working in collaboration with the San Pedro Town Council and the Alaia Belize resort, the group spent part of their retreat participating in a large-scale clean-up and beautification project focused on improving the Boca del Rio Park area. One of the Americans who helped spearhead the initiative, Byron, says the idea was developed as a way to combine the company’s reward trip with meaningful community engagement in Belize.
According to organizers, planning for the initiative began several months ago through discussions involving the visiting corporate team, the San Pedro Town Council, and Alaia Belize. Priscilla Torres of Alaia Belize says the project has been in the making for approximately eight months and reflects a shared commitment to community partnership and sustainable tourism efforts on the island.
Representatives of the San Pedro Town Council say the Boca del Rio Park project forms part of a wider vision for continued development and enhancement of public recreational spaces across the island.
