Waste Warriors Camp Teaches Students Climate Action and Recycling

Twenty-five students spent the day learning that protecting our environment goes far beyond simply throwing garbage in the right place. The Waste Warriors Camp was held at the Belmopan Civic Center by the Belize Solid Waste Management Authority and the Department of Climate Change, giving students a hands-on look at waste management and climate action. The students learned about recycling, resource recovery and transfer stations. They also took part in waste-sorting activities and learned how composting can turn waste into something useful. But the lessons went beyond waste disposal. The camp also focused on helping the students understand climate change, its importance and practical ways they can help combat its effects. Public Relations Officer Tyrone Chimilío says the camp is designed to build environmental awareness from a young age.

The Waste Warriors Camp is ultimately encouraging these young participants to take what they learned back to their schools, families and communities and become environmental warriors. /
