Social Workers Share Challenges of Helping Vulnerable Families in Belize

Three social workers from the Ministry of Human Development appeared on the Morning Show on Love FM and Love Television today, where they shared insights into the challenging but important work they do in supporting vulnerable individuals and families across Belize.  Among them was Gianne Gillet, a social worker stationed in San Pedro Town, whose primary focus is addressing cases of domestic violence. Gillet explained that one of the most difficult aspects of her work is helping individuals recognize when they are in abusive relationships. She noted that in many instances, victims may not initially identify the behavior they are experiencing as abuse.

Also appearing on the program was Osiris Belisle, who is based in Belize City and works primarily in the area of child protection. Belisle explained that safeguarding children often requires a coordinated effort among multiple organizations and agencies. She highlighted that social workers regularly collaborate with law enforcement, schools, healthcare providers, and other support services to ensure that children who may be at risk receive the protection and assistance they need.

Meanwhile, Shane Sinclair, another Belize City–based social worker, discussed his work with juveniles who come into contact with the law. Sinclair said that many of the young people they encounter face difficult circumstances, and social workers play an important role in guiding them toward positive alternatives and rehabilitation.

The three social workers emphasized that their profession requires patience, compassion, and strong collaboration with communities, as they work daily to support families, protect children, and help individuals overcome challenging life situations
