The Jamaica Debates Commission, JDC, says it has secured a sign language interpreter for Tuesday’s political debate.
The statement follows public discourse on the absence of a sign language interpreter at the first debate last Saturday.
In a release on Tuesday, the JDC says it had consulted representatives from the deaf community and received a list of recommended interpreters from which to choose for the social issues debate.
It says a decision was then made which best balanced the needs of the audience and internal requirements.
But the Commission noted that the interpreter selected for last Saturday’s debate cancelled hours before the event started without notice.
It says it had no choice but to proceed without an interpreter.
The Commission also dismissed claims that politics played a role in not having sign language services for the first debate.
It says those assertions are unfounded and without merit.
The second political debate is set for 9 o’clock tonight.
The JLP’s team will feature Fayval Williams, Dr. Christopher Tufton and Dr. Dana Morris Dixon.
They will match wits with the PNP’s Julian Robinson, Peter Bunting and Kisha Anders
