Police Officer Hospitalized After Belize City Shooting

A police officer remains hospitalized in a stable condition following a shooting incident over the weekend in Belize City.  According to police reports, the incident occurred yesterday shortly after two twenty-five in the afternoon on Raleigh Street. Authorities say information was received of shots being fired in the area, prompting a response from C.I.B. personnel.  Officers later visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where they observed forty-two-year-old Leroy Kerr, a Belizean police officer, suffering from multiple gunshot injuries to the body.  ASP Stacy Smith provided the media with an update on the matter, confirming that one person has been detained.

Stacy Smith, Assistant Superintendent of Police: “Police are investigating a shooting incident which resulted in the injury of a 42-year-old Leroy Kerr, a Belize Police Constable and Chadrick Galvez, a construction worker both of the Belize District. The investigation comments on Sunday, 22nd March, at approximately 2:25pm, when officers on patrol in the vicinity of Raleigh Street, St. Martin’s Deporres area were alerted to the sounds of shots being fired. Investigators were advised that two male persons were transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital having been injured in the shooting incident. What we have learned so far in the course of this ongoing investigation is that those two individuals as well as another person were working on a house on Raleigh Street when they came under fire. Police investigation into this incident continues.”

Kerr was injured during the attack and transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where he continues to receive medical treatment. Meanwhile, Galvez reportedly sustained a gunshot graze, while the minor was not injured.
