Prime Minister John Briceño says the controversy surrounding Minister of Home Affairs Oscar Mira and government contracts awarded to members of his family has placed him in a very uncomfortable position, prompting immediate action by his administration. The Prime Minister made the remarks today during an interview today when he was questioned about concerns surrounding what has been described as a network of related individuals benefiting from public contracts amounting to significant sums of money. Leading off his response, Briceño acknowledged the discomfort the situation has created and confirmed that he has already directed the Cabinet Secretary to appoint a new Board of Directors for the Reconstruction and Development Corporation, commonly known as Recondev. The directive comes as scrutiny continues to intensify over the entity, which is currently headed by Brian Mira, the brother of Minister Oscar Mira. In that interview, the Prime Minister indicated that government will be undertaking a thorough review of all matters connected to the ongoing controversy. He stressed that while numerous questions have been raised publicly, he intends to await the outcome of that review before providing definitive answers. Briceño told reporters that once government has examined the issues and gathered all relevant information, he will be in a better position to respond to concerns being raised by the media and the public. The Prime Minister also revealed that he has spoken directly with Minister Mira about the controversy. According to Briceño, he advised the minister that public officials must be prepared to accept criticism that comes with holding public office. The comments clearly referred to the complaint filed by Mira against UDP’s Alberto August which essentially opened a Pandora’s Box and placed his family members under severe scrutiny. The Prime Minister noted that what has happened cannot be undone and suggested that Mira should take the episode as a lesson in managing public criticism and accountability.
