More Than 80 Projects Receive Belize River Watershed Micro-Grants

More than 80 community projects are receiving support through a micro-grants programme aimed at protecting and strengthening communities along the Belize River Watershed. The projects range from sustainable farming to ecotourism and are helping residents turn local ideas into action. Communities from Santa Familia to Flowers Bank are benefiting from the GEF-6 Micro-Grants Programme, which has approved more than 80 projects across the Belize River Watershed. The projects are being carried out by individuals, community groups and schools, with a focus on areas such as sustainable agriculture, ecotourism and other initiatives that support local development. Women, men and young people are among those using the grants to create solutions that help their communities while protecting the environment. The programme is supported by the Global Environment Facility through the United Nations Development Programme. Local partners Belize Enterprise for Sustainable Technology, or BEST, and the Community Baboon Sanctuary Women’s Conservation Group continue to work with communities as projects move forward. An evaluation committee also plays a key role in reviewing and approving the proposals. Organizers say the projects show how local communities are helping to protect the Belize River Watershed through practical, grassroots efforts.
