Leonora Flowers Re-Elected Christian Workers Union President

Leonora Flowers has secured another term as President of the Christian Workers Union (CWU). Flowers was re-elected unopposed during the union’s Annual General Meeting held yesterday at the CWU Secretariat in Belize City.  Flowers will serve another three-year term at the helm of the union. Elections were also held to fill a vacancy for trustee on the CWU Executive Board. Jaime Miranda received two hundred and thirty-eight votes, defeating Winfield Dennison, who received twenty-eight. The elections were conducted by Shane Reneau of the Public Service Union.  The AGM was held under the theme, “CWU: Faithful Stewards in a Season of Transformation.” Guest speaker and Labour Senator Glenfield Dennison reminded members that many of the benefits workers enjoy today resulted from struggles undertaken by earlier union members since the CWU’s establishment in 1962.  Drawing on the history and experiences of stevedores, Dennison urged members to remain committed even when their efforts do not produce immediate results. He also reminded those in attendance that union stewardship is not only about what members receive, but also what they contribute to the organization.  The meeting included representatives from the Belize and Belmopan City Councils, Central Bank of Belize, Citrus Products of Belize Limited, Development Finance Corporation, Port of Belize Limited, Social Security Board and Statistical Institute of Belize. Stevedores, independent members and CWU staff were also in attendance.
