Soca powerhouse Machel Montano is turning the camera inward after a high-energy Carnival season, as a new documentary offers fans an unprecedented look at the man behind the global stage persona. Like Ah Boss: Journey of a Soca King premieres today in Jamaica, tracing his rise, pressures, and personal evolution at a pivotal moment in soca’s global expansion.
The film debuts at Carib 5, following Montano’s standout performances during Carnival in Jamaica’s Road March celebrations over the weekend. Far from a typical performance recap, the documentary leans into vulnerability and legacy, highlighting the discipline and emotional weight behind decades of dominance in Caribbean music.
Montano also reflects on his deep-rooted ties to Jamaica, revealing formative childhood memories on the island, including early schooling at Mona Basic and participation in the early evolution of Jamaica Carnival. Those experiences, he says, helped shape both his artistic identity and his long-standing connection to Jamaican culture and sound systems.
Now in the middle of his Encore global tour, Montano is pushing soca further onto the world stage, with upcoming stops in West Africa, including Ghana. As Like Ah Boss begins its rollout, the film positions him not just as a performer, but as a cultural architect whose influence stretches from Port of Spain to Kingston and beyond, marking another defining chapter in his evolving legacy.
