Residents in Dangriga are still contending with high floodwaters a day after heavy rainfall battered the Stann Creek District, with locals in low-lying areas reporting water levels of around three feet as of nine o’clock this morning. District Coordinator for Stann Creek NEMO, David Cruz, said the rainfall lasted between eleven and thirteen hours in some areas. While waters are slowly receding in parts of the district, other communities continue to feel the impact of the downpour, and Cruz said authorities are now moving to assess all areas in Stann Creek that were affected.
David Cruz, District Coordinator, Stann Creek NEMO: “It is expected that a fly over will be done in the affected areas to see affected likely percentage of the area being damaged. So we did a drive through but we’ll do an aerial one to see exactly in the Stann Creek district on a whole.”
Reporter: We understand that certain areas in Dangriga really are flood prone or are lower lying areas, could you tell us about the condition of those areas right now ?
David Cruz, District Coordinator, Stann Creek NEMO: “The waters have receded in most of the town. Areas that would have a little water being settled would be in the Wagierale areas , in Rivas Estate we have a little bit as well.”
