Construction Worker Freed After Guilty Pleas in Domestic Dispute Case

A 25-year-old construction worker spent months behind bars on remand before finally entering guilty pleas to charges stemming from a domestic dispute with family members, ultimately walking free with four non-custodial sentences and fines totaling $1,420.00. Shawn Humes of Wagners Lane, Belize City, was originally arraigned on November 21, 2025, on four criminal charges, one count of aggravated assault, one count of threat of death, and two counts of damage to property. The alleged offences involved his aunt, Naomi Humes, and his grandmother, Benita Lorezo.  According to the charges, Humes assaulted his aunt with a pint bottle and threatened to kill her. He also allegedly destroyed property belonging to both women, including a black bureau valued at $700.00, a pair of tennis shoes ($60.00), a glass oven ($450.00), a 20-inch Samsung TV ($360.00), and a Lasko fan ($105.00) totaling approximately $905.00 in damages to his grandmother’s property alone.  At the initial arraignment, Humes entered guilty pleas, however Senior Magistrate Mannon Dennison declined to accept the pleas for the assault and threat of death charges after Humes disputed the facts as read. He was offered bail of $2,000.00 but was unable to post it, leaving him on remand at the Belize Central Prison for the duration.  When his case returned to court, Humes changed his plea to guilty on all remaining charges. He was fined $300.00 plus a $5.00 court fee for aggravated assault, and $100.00 plus a $5.00 court fee for threat of death, with the property damage charges accounting for the remainder of the total sum owed. Humes has until November 21, to settle all outstanding fines..
