Clarendon come from behind to hold STETHS

A GUTSY 10-man Clarendon College rallied to secure a 1-1 draw with St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) in the opening fixture of the ISSA daCosta Cup quarterfinal round at the STETHS Sports Complex yesterday.

In front of an energetic crowd, STETHS, courtesy of Kaieem Lewis, sank a penalty in the 50th minute before Clarendon College’s Rwanie Rampasaul capitalised on sloppy defending to equalise in the 57th.

In the 82nd minute, Clarendon’s Anthony Reid was issued a red card for a tackle.

The result leaves Group 2 STETHS, Clarendon, Dinthill Technical, and Christiana High tied on a point.

Speaking to The Gleaner, Omar ‘Rambo’ Wedderburn, coach of STETHS, said it was an unexpected result.

“Of the two teams today, I think we feel the worse way because of how the goal was scored. It was not something we expected,” said Wedderburn.

Wedderburn said the focus is not for the still unbeaten STETHS to dwell on the result.

“We have to dig deep because if you want to win a championship, you have to play against adversity,” Wedderburn said.

Meanwhile, Devon Anderson, coach of Clarendon College, said the team showed resilience despite being unable to win the game.

“It was a gutsy performance by the team. We knew it wouldn’t be easy playing here but we fought and conquered even though we never left with three points.

“I told them I would go to war with them any day and today this certified it. I am not comfortable with the point, but I will take it and regroup for the next match.”

In the West, 12-time champions Cornwall College continued their impressive run, notching their first win of the quarterfinals with a 2-0 result over last year’s finalists McGrath High.

Cornwall College’s top goal scorer Carlondo Morris added his 22nd goal of the season in the 66th minute. In added time, Cornwall College’s Shaheem Bernard doubled the lead.

The result means Cornwall are tied on three points with Glenmuir High, but lead on goal difference. McGrath are tied with Kemps Hill without a point, the latter leading on goal difference.

When the quarterfinals resume on Tuesday, Glenmuir will look to make things tough for McGrath High at home.

On Wednesday, Christiana High will match up against STETHS at Manchester High playing field, while Dinthill will face Clarendon at home.

Kemps Hill will host Cornwall College at Glenmuir High.

All games are set for kickoff at 3:00 p.m.
