Children’s Book Launch Kicks Off National Fire Safety Campaign

A children’s book launch at the National Heritage Library has marked the start of a national fire safety and health awareness campaign aimed at educating young Belizeans and their families.  The book, titled How Taiga Became Fiah Taiga, was authored by Gail Lash in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Organization and the Ministry of Sustainable Development. The initiative uses storytelling as a tool to teach children about the safe and responsible use of fire.  Central to the campaign is the character “Fiah Taiga,” a tiger introduced as the official mascot for the initiative. The character is intended to help promote fire safety awareness among children while encouraging responsible environmental practices.  Love News spoke with author Gail Lash, who explained the inspiration behind the book and how the story was developed as a creative way to deliver an important safety message.

The campaign also seeks to address public concerns surrounding jaguars by portraying the animal as a symbol of environmental protection. In the story, Fiah Taiga is depicted as a guardian of the forest who warns other animals about approaching wildfires and encourages early action to prevent disasters.  Organizers say the book will be distributed in primary and secondary schools across the country as part of a broader outreach effort. It will also be available for purchase online to members of the public.  The launch event was attended by representatives from partner agencies, educators, and community members, highlighting a collaborative approach to public awareness and environmental education in Belize.
