Belize Water Services Limited says its southside Belize City Water Storage Expansion Project is moving along. The project is currently fifty-four percent complete and includes the installation of a new two-hundred-and-fifty-thousand-gallon storage tank at the company’s headquarters. That tank is the first of two planned for the site, as BWS works toward building up to one million gallons of storage capacity for customers on the southside of Belize City. BWS Chief Operations Officer Sanjay Keshwani says the additional storage is needed to help the company better manage the demands placed on the system.

Sanjay Keshwani, Chief Operator BWS: “We are building the two tanks at Southside, near by HQ, Southside station. Each tank is about 250,000 gallon in terms of storage. Value of each tank is about 2.25 million, Belize dollars. Over period of time Belize has , specifically Belize City and Belize district has really overgrown the population and the existing tank which is about 500,000 gallon tank, it barely provides six hours storage. Main line comes from the Double Run plant which is located at Sand Hill. We are looking at 17 miles of pipeline and if there is a breakage on that line, sometimes that repair takes up to 12 hours. So we will run out of water within a six hours, specifically on south side of Belize City. So increase that storage capacity in order for us not to run out of water for people while we are doing any repair. So basically it’s quick response time, protect the water security, and be available for customers 24/7 so nobody has that inconvenience while we are doing maintenance and repair works. That is a main purpose to increase storage at Belize City.”
BWS shared having more water stored locally will also help during situations such as maintenance, emergencies, or unexpected disruptions. BWS says the added capacity will give its teams more flexibility when managing the network, especially during times when demand increases. Keshwani also mentioned the project is not only about adding tanks, but also about making sure customers have a more dependable supply of water moving forward.
Sanjay Keshwani, Chief Operator BWS: “So expected time to complete these two tanks is March 15, 2027. Both tanks should be finished by that time. Under the last five years business plan we have reported that we completed about $115 million investment in Belize, countrywide. And we have similar plans for you on this business plan. And many locations, we are building the storage capacity for the similar reasons and more other projects.”
BWS noted the Southside Belize City Water Storage Expansion Project is part of its continued work to strengthen the country’s water infrastructure and improve service for customers and should be expected to be completed by mid-March of 2027.
