Blue Teddy Bear Campaign Launched to Raise Awareness of Child Abuse

A new national initiative aimed at protecting Belize’s children from violence and abuse was officially launched this morning in Belize City, as key stakeholders joined forces to promote awareness and community action.  The Blue Teddy Bear Campaign was unveiled at the Hub, spearheaded by UNICEF Belize in collaboration with the National Commission for Families and Children. The initiative is focused on preventing violence and sexual abuse against children while restoring a sense of safety and security for young people across the country.

Minister of Human Development, Family Support, and Gender Affairs, Thea Garcia, attended the launch and underscored the importance of a united national response to safeguarding Belize’s children.

At the heart of the campaign is the blue teddy bear, a symbol of comfort, healing, and protection. Organizers say it is intended to mobilize individuals, families, schools, and businesses to become active champions for child safety, while also raising awareness about the importance of preventing abuse.  Chairperson of the NCFC, Maria Contreras, explained that the campaign will expand through nationwide engagement, education, and partnerships with key institutions.

Efforts to build momentum for the campaign began months ago as back in February, representatives from UNICEF Belize and the NCFC engaged senior officers of the Belize Police Department, outlining the campaign’s objectives and strengthening collaboration on child protection responses. Those discussions also provided guidance on reporting cases of abuse and preserving critical evidence.  The Blue Teddy Bear Campaign is expected to roll out across communities nationwide, reinforcing a shared commitment to protect children and ensure that every child in Belize grows up in a safe and supportive environment.
