Belmopan Mayor Pushes Dashcam Plan to Strengthen Crime Detection

In a more long-term vision in crime fighting and justice, Belmopan Mayor Pablo Cawich, says they will be pursuing an idea of dashcams that came about months ago.  The mayor laments not pushing for this initiative back then but says the initiative would still be timely and useful to have every motor vehicle owner invest in dashcams.

Pablo Cawich, Mayor of Belmopan City: “I think we also need to explore new initiatives in the line of the data gathering. Part of this team’s vision for the city was to try and implement or create a dash cam movement within our residents so that initially we could have utilized this type of footage to report and catch violations, traffic violations. It’s not something that we have taken on a serious note as yet, but if we had started that movement already the footage caught by these dash cams could have assisted in better evidence gathering. So I think as citizens we have that responsibility to also try and ensure that we do our part to promote safety.”

Over the past few days, residents of the Cayo District have been rallying around the family of the late Mark Anthony Gabourel, as local business Just-A-Dollar, in partnership with Play Chune Marketing, has launched a fundraising drive to support his two young daughters.  Organizers have described the killing of Gabourel as a senseless and inhumane act and are calling on Belizeans to respond with unity, compassion, and collective action.  In this effort, the funds raised will go toward the education of Gabourel’s children.
