Belize Expresses Solidarity With Colombia After Deadly Earthquake


The Government and people of Belize are expressing solidarity with Colombia following a powerful earthquake that caused widespread destruction and loss of life in the South American nation today.  The magnitude-seven-point-four earthquake struck western Colombia this morning, with its epicentre near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region. The tremor was felt across several parts of the country, including Bogotá, Cali and Pereira. Buildings collapsed in several cities, while rescue teams continued searching for people trapped beneath the rubble. At least eighty-two deaths had been reported by this afternoon, but the figure remained subject to change as emergency operations continued. In a statement issued through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, the Belize Government lamented the loss of life and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died.  The Ministry says Belize stands with the Government and people of Colombia during this difficult period and wishes strength and courage to everyone affected by the disaster.  Colombian authorities have mobilized emergency personnel in the hardest-hit areas as they assess the damage and continue search-and-rescue operations. The earthquake was officially recorded at magnitude seven-point-four by the Colombian Geological Service.
