Belize Developing Climate Disaster Preparedness and Resilient Housing Plan

Work has begun on a proposal to improve disaster preparedness, strengthen early warning systems and help vulnerable communities in Belize better protect their homes against climate-related disasters.  The Ministry of Economic Transformation and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust, PACT, held an initial meeting with agencies that will help shape the proposal. They included the Development Finance Corporation, the National Meteorological Service and NEMO.  Ministry CEO Carlos Pol and staff from the Climate Finance Unit also joined the discussions, along with the consultants preparing the proposal.  The meeting focused on what the project should address and the activities it could include. Consultations and site visits are scheduled throughout this week to get technical advice and hear local perspectives before the proposal is developed further.  The project is still in the planning stage with the aim of identifying practical ways to improve disaster warnings, help communities prepare and make housing more resilient.
