Belize City Woman Charged With Wounding Daughter-in-Law

A 62-year-old Belize City woman is out on bail after being accused of wounding her daughter-in-law. Vernice Jex appeared in court this week and pleaded not guilty to the charge. Vernice Jex, a retired resident of New Road, Belize City, was arraigned in Court Two of the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on a single charge of wounding. The allegation stems from an incident said to have happened on October 4, 2026, at her New Road residence. Jex appeared before a Magistrate, represented by attorney Norman Rodriguez. During court proceedings, when asked about her relationship with the complainant, Diane Young, Jex told the court that Young is the woman who has a child with her son — making Young her daughter-in-law. Jex pleaded not guilty and was offered bail in the amount of one thousand five hundred dollars, along with one surety of the same amount. As part of her bail conditions, Jex must not contact or interfere with Young, must stay at least 100 feet away from her, and must attend all scheduled court appearances. Her next court date is set for January 5, 2027.
